maybe… but there’s no portrait in the game files with his picture on either.
I mentioned this before… but here is the actual lines of code I found in the bm_c2a4g.bsp map file (this is the laser lab map)
ftp://ev1te.myftp.org/BMS-ARG/Upload.Public/Parts.from.bm_c2a4g.bsp.txt
Several “prop_ragdoll” and “env_physexplosion” classes with these attributes are present:
“targetentityname” “dr_horn”
“targetname” “dr_horn”
The coordinates corresponds to the location of the explosion and death of the scientist/guard which overcharges the Tau cannon.
Has anyone tried using the console commands to spawn a “Dr. Bottomley”, “Dr. Horn”, “Dr. Stone” or other related props / objects? If not, I’ll give it a go when I get back from class.
EDIT: ev1te–this is one of the whiteboards that deals primarily with the tau cannon: https://i.imgur.com/sIexfh.jpg
Think it says “tautau” in there somewhere. Will double-check it when I get back.
Yah, I tried spawning dr_horn. It said he doesn’t exist.
Pizza’s were directly referenced in the terminal.blackmesasource.com page which was only found through clues from the ARG (code A and the IRC clue)… Pizza’s are mentioned in the console message which tells Dr Horn to go to the cafeteria, where the composite image code was found and pizzas are also mentioned on the same whiteboard as the long ciphertext (“Do not allow security officer Sisk near my pizzas, he will eat them - Dr Horn”).
EDIT: This could still be coincidental tying in of the ARG to a pizza based easter egg though, just saying
Yeah but the terminal page wasn’t found till after we’d started talking about them, plenty of time for the references to be added. It reads like it was written after we started looking - considering we could’ve named this thread something else. The rest of it is indirect rather than outright.
On the terminal website, if you look at the source, of the letters DR HORN, only D, O, R, and N have a ‘strong’ tag. Had this been noticed before?
Yep.
Aw drat. I hadn’t seen it in the last overview post Oh well.
In questionable ethics A harrier model with glue and other hobby stuff is seen on his desk, he apparently likes making model-planes.
I did a thorough search in the BMS folder for the term “dr?horn” in all the files (? = any one 1 character), the resulting files were only these:
qecode.mp3 - artist name SSTV
bm_c2a4g.hl1 - overcharging of tau gun scientist named Dr Horn
bm_c2a4g.cache - Sound cache file (cached qeocode.mp3)
bm_c2a4g.bsp - overcharging of tau gun scientist named Dr Horn
_other_rebuild.cache - Sound cache file (cached qeocode.mp3)
looked through the easter eggs thread and saw this https://picasaweb.google.com/HughJundys/BlackMesa#5791179548678991314 - the only full date I think we’ve seen in Black Mesa.
EDIT - though I’ve tried it with all the keyphrases I can think of and nothing.
Couple of things tonight:
- Another date to try, a bit of a long shot but those middle numbers could be 1964. Can find it everywhere:
https://picasaweb.google.com/HughJundys/BlackMesa#5790384816095173810 - Found another notepad imprint, on Dr Foreman’s desk who shares an office with Dr Horn. Don’t recall seeing the original anywhere:
https://picasaweb.google.com/HughJundys/BlackMesa#5792241620528431282 - Grabbed the eyeball off the floor fom the gibbed remains of the person in the ‘overcharged-weapon’ room. Trotted down the corridoor and tried it in a couple of eye scanners but nothing. I was hoping to get into Lab C with it at the end of the main corridoor. Maybe someone who can open the maps with Hammer could see if any of the eye-scanners in any map have triggers…
- This interests me only because the text ‘Aggressor Beware’ is extreemely clear:
https://picasaweb.google.com/HughJundys/BlackMesa#5791036926693609602 - I posted this already in the ‘Easter Eggs’ thread. I doubt it helps but think it’s funny. Note misspelling - BurgAr:

[01:13] has anyone listened to the gmain voice files?
[01:13] gman
[01:13] gman_mumble#.wav
[01:14] it may just be distortion, but it sounds like theres something in the background
[01:16] it’s because it’s an 11000hz file
[01:17] it almost sounds like feedback from ham radio
[01:17] ok yeah some do
[01:21] == toastedmilk [webchat@74-44-28-46.dr01.lmrs.ia.frontiernet.net] has quit [Quit: Page closed]
[01:24] I don’t think the gman mumbles will tell us anything but it’s worht a try
[01:25] the sixth one is “a scientist and a frog, dada”
[01:25] the fifth is “my employers don’t have greed” I think
[01:26] the fourth… “If I had one… something… I could smoke it”
[01:26] the third “I don’t think I need to remind you that”
[01:26] can’t make anything out of the second
[01:27] the first sounds like “this is not legitimate information”
[01:29] if i had one suggestion
[01:30] 1) this is not my decision to make
[01:30] 2) you’ve made no … motorcycle sounds
[01:31] yeah, agreed with #1
[01:31] 3) i dont think anyone can help you with that
[01:32] 4) if i had one suggestion i would certainly…
[01:32] 5) my employers don’t agree
[01:32] 5) my employers dont believe
[01:34] 6) something scientist and a frog?, dada
[01:34] yah, the last one makes no sense
[01:36] I really couldn’t make anything else out of that
Nope. No triggers on eye scanners. Just checked.
This sounds like a case of audio pareidolia to me. You could make any number of things out of the mumbling Gman. It’s like when people think they hear messages in backmasked audio recordings or what have you.
Not to rain on the parade, but I do think that particular avenue, interesting as it is (and it is; I’ve sat outside the window trying to interpret what they’re saying for ages, both in BM and HL ), is barking up the wrong tree.
Paul.Bottomley, R I P? Haha wow what a user title.
Someone in another thread found the lipsync info for the Gman scene when he’s talking to the scientist in Anomalous Materials:

Did you notice that in BM, the subtitles for their mumbling are utterly hilarious? It’s just a constant stream of synonyms.
cylinder_store_cylinder.vtf has dates on it - “last inspection 02/08/1998 next inspection 05/08/2008”
some more dates on texture panel_safe_top_scroll and other textures that use the same article. Whether any of these are of use is anyone’s guess.
