Into editing a modern game! I must say, the things Source can do are a hell of a lot better than a game running a 5 year old version of q3. Anyways, here’s my first attempt at mapping for source. Took me a while because a) I’m reading tutorials as I go and b) Hammer crashes every hour.
Looks awesome for a first attempt. :3
That’s a nice flooded basement
Nice, can i play that!?
Looks like a good start!
Keep posting them screenshawts plz!
Comparing that to my first map is like comparing Black Mesa to Pong or Crysis to Space Invaders.
Nice job!
Crysis < Space Invaders
Keep in mind I’ve edited a brush-based game for several years, so I’m already pretty used to how it works. The only difference is in the shortcuts available in the editor that make for efficient mapping.
Anyhow, I’ma do more today because it’s fun! :3
Needs more floating debris and props :awesome:
was that sarcasm, or…?
if I was in that room alone I would’ve died from fear
p.s nice one bro
Well, it’s really up to you. I find that flooded basements with floating stuff would be neat.
@Shadi: Good, I’m going for an ominous atmosphere. I’ve wanted to do a horror-themed thing for a long time now, and Source really has the capabilities to create my vision, whereas Jedi Academy did not.
@LimitBreak: Good point.
Those look really good. I can’t even get freakin Hammer to run :’( .
Believe me, I have to wrestle with Hammer to get it to work. Half the shit I’m doing is really not supposed to be done, such as naming my map ‘untitled’ and saving it in my documents because I have no clue where the hell I’m supposed to save maps for HL2. :fffuuu:
Also, making particles and even things as simple as soundscapes work is fucking confusing. Is it really necessary to edit text files to add sound to your map?
I have to say that’s a nice start, but if you ask me, the lights should be more blue-ish gray, gives a creepier atmosphere.
Ambient_generic is the entity you’re looking for, soundscapes are for making “automated” atmospheric soundscapes. I haven’t tried meddling around with particles yet, so I won’t be able to help on that one.
interlopers.net is the best community when it comes to mapping in Hammer, has loads of tutorials and an entire forum of mappers ready to help you out.
Also, it doesn’t really matter where you save your maps to, but
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps*********\sourcesdk_content\ep2 is the generic (episode two) map destination.
Then you haven’t tried very hard.
Yeah, I looked at ambient_generics, but practically every sound I search for is a speech file. I want ambient noises, and there are like 5. Maybe I’m looking in the wrong place? I know there are a ton of ambient noises in HL2/ep2.
Also, you guys are surprisingly receptive!
Hm. Is ‘Sound Type’ (when browsing sound files) marked as ‘Game Sounds’ or ‘Raw’?
game sounds
Try Raw. I just looked it up in Hammer, and Game Sounds is indeed mainly speech files.
