about Xen atmosphere

…He is meant to be there.

@Neon Impulse :if you dont know things for sure, you should shut the fuck up.i am sick of people like you, that call people liars just for their lolz.serously, think about that

[COLOR=‘Red’]Jesus Christ. The pair of you are responding to a post made weeks ago, when numerous people have already corrected him. And MadMax drop the attitude, randomly flame like that again and I’ll hurt you. As someone who is yet to add anything even vaguely worthwhile to the thread you’re in no position to attack other people.

ok,sry

doesnt the teleporter only malfunction on gordon?

My theory:

The helmet is integrated into the HEV suit, but is retractable (think hardtop convertible). Gordon likes it down whenever he can because he is a total bad ass.

Don’t know if people have overlooked this or not, but how would you go about explaining how the Xen creatures can survive both on their planet and on ours if the atmosphere isn’t exactly the same as ours?

I don’t really take the whole helmet thing too seriously. I like to think that it’s either retractable or that he can take it off easily, but it’s not something that should be at the forefront of any topic that has the word Xen in it somewhere. It all pales in significance when the odds of having two world’s atmospheres completely the same so as to support eachother’s life would be a million to one.

And what are the chances of opening up an interdimensional portal that ends up right on a platform on a world where you just fall in the void if you walk 3 steps in the wrong direction?

^ Case in point. It’s a game basically.

Most Sci-Fi movies / series do the same thing. In Star Trek, Star Wars, Stargate… they visit dozens of places, and never bother about the atmosphere. Except the occasional: “I’ll hold this gadget and press a button and it will make a bleeping noise to tell me that the atmosphere isn’t dangerous, even though we’d probably be dead already if it was.”

I’m not holding it against Half-Life. I just find it odd that so many people have been drawn into this whole helmet debate when Half-Life is full of inconsistencies and impossibilities and confuseries.

Something else to consider is that apparently nothing is native to Xen. So either you have a lot of other planets similar to ours atmosphere wise, or the Xen creatures would have already had to adapt from their home planet in order to survive on Xen. Or maybe Xen is somehow able to support all forms of life? It is another universe, so things there might not have to work like they do here.

like humans on xen dont need to breath?

I never understood why people can’t accept the fact that the expansions (Op4/BS/Decay) are canon! Marc Laidlaw wrote the story for HL1/Op4/BS/HL2/Ep1/Ep2 and despite the expansions being developed by Gearbox they did so under the auspices of VALVe.

Some people say that Op4 isn’t canon because of the Race X aliens, well maybe VALVe decided afterwards that they would never use them again in any of the HL games. But this would’ve happened because at the time Op4 was being developed the HL2 story wasn’t yet finished. Just like they retconned appearances for Eli, Kleiner and references to Magnusson into HL1, none of these characters appeared in HL1 when the game was released because VALVe hadn’t yet created these characters! After HL2 was released they simply looked at HL1 and said, that black guy is Eli, the white guy next to him is Kleiner and the exploding casserole belonged to Magnusson.

Unless VALVe actually comes out and states that the expansions aren’t canon, then we should just assume them to be canon.

Which, as you’ve seen elsewhere, they have.

Actually, I believe he said that the canon was basically based on the fan. While VALVe was stating they did not have BS and Op4 story lines co-mingle with the current HL story… they were still (by law) needed to approve whatever Gearbox made. Even though, as he stated, Gearbox was able to follow VALVe ideas or not, because of copywrite laws they would have at least still needed to be approved.

Now, obviously, following STRICTLY to what VALVe has made, then no. The two are not canon. But honestly, the story lines mesh very well. While there are inconsistencies (it is… after all… a game), there are enough lateral equalities with their story lines and regular HL’s story line, they can actually be taken into account.

Again, I do believe he said the idea of canon, and taking it to full account, was based on the fan.

Valve approving the expansions is somewhat beside the point. He said the idea of a HL ‘canon’ came from fans, and he finished by saying that you can identify canon by what appears in Valve HL games going forward. Eg, Barney’s surname of Calhoun, while it was first featured in Blue Shift, also appears in the HL2 credits and is therefore canon. Race X from Opposing Force have not appeared in any of the HL2 series, so they are not canon, or their canon status is unknown if you prefer. If they were to appear in Episode 3 (unlikely, I know) then they would then be canon.

I completely forgot the duplication reference he made. Touche’.

Hi, I’m new to this forum and I think there is oxygen in Xen because Gordon doesn’t have a helmet. You can see him without the helmet if you type thirdperson to the HL1 console.

^This guy is revolutionary. I mean, he brought a new perspective to this debate. No one never though of that. It’ll say in the annals for sure.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
