Those masks don’t exactly provide oxygen. Or even re-breathe it. Xen is supposed to be fantastical/impossible. That’s what makes it interesting.

I have three theories;

Gordon has a Helmet that supplies oxygen, Shepherd has his gas mask helmet, and Barney… doesn’t need to breathe or something…

Xen has at least some percentage of oxygen in order to be able to sustain humans going there. Seeing also that Xenians came to earth and were fine, it could be deduced that they breathe oxygen, and so it would therefore be plentiful in Xen.

Its a borderworld/subuniverse/alternate dimesion thing. Considering this there is the possibility it doesn’t comply with certain earth-realm principles/science. Seeing as you seem to fall, even when in a nebulaic void with no visible planetary bodies below, this supports that idea.

Xen has air. Freeman doesnt have the helmet, Shephard’s helmet is a gasmask, and doesnt have an air reserve, barney doesnt have an air reserve either. And xen aliens can breathe on earth
Xen MUST have air, because in opposing force you can see freeman without a helmet on xen and he doesn’t appear to be choking:p

Why does everyone think it’s so far fetched for Xen to have an atmosphere? Many planets have atmospheres. Ever heard of Venus? What do you think that big cloud of gas around it is? Hell, the planets from Jupiter to Neptune are theorized to be made up of NOTHING BUT gas. Once again, my point is many alien planets have atmospheres, it isn’t impossible.
Have you ever broken a bone before? If so, then you must have a strange ability to survive radiation from the X-Rays in nothing but a hospital gown. When a dentist takes X-rays of your teeth, they shoot radiation right at your face. Your not exposed for more than a few seconds, so there is no damage.

- xenian world is not a planetary one, it rather seems to be an alternate universe, where at 10^-43sec after bigbang gravity didn’t ordinary separate from protoforce and pieces of ground may hang not affecting each other, but affecting creatures, aliens and gordons.

Well, it IS possible that XEN was once an actual planet with atmosphere, but was later destroyed. (i’ve got a concept art somewhere, not by me, but I can’t find it right now.)
This would imply that some of the residual atmospheric gases where present. Since the Vortigaunts and other aliens could survive in the Earth atmosphere, it is possible that the residual fragments of artmosphere around the larger asteroids (the floating islands) could contain oxygen. The fragmentation would also explain the low gravity situation.
