A thought about progress updates

Seems a reasonable request. I’m with you.

Phew, I was beginning to think i was the greatest moron ever to even dare state a suggestion like that.
There is no hate or disrespect to the devs from my side.

You don’t have to come here all the time to know if the mod is released. You can just check the main page or gaming sites.

@Maxey, that is true. It was merely a thought i posted where everyone, including the devs and moderators would be pleased for a period of time.

But when that period of time ends, there will be a major shitstorm. You can be sure of that.

There’s more than one way I can interpret that. What exactly are you implying?

It would indeed make sense, and the other thing is that the developers don’t have to care that much about what we think. If they give us media, a release date, or progress updates, people on the forum will start speculating, complaining and moaning, probably, but so what? No one said they have to please us, or care about what we think, or even read what we say on the forums. So saying that they don’t want to give us media because they think we will never be satisfied is just like saying that they will give us media but not care about our reaction.

Anyway, the thing is that big companies like Valve generally give a release date but make no attempt to reach it. Then they give us a more precise release date fairly close to the actual release, just as we expect from the Black Mesa team. So it makes sense to say that giving a release date is pointless, as it is almost entirely random and will only probably cause disappointment that could have been avoided by not saying anything.

Does Valve release media? Do they say how much more work they have to do? No. They probably have a straightforward reason for that. The only thing they do is give us release dates, and they keep missing them, which only leads to people complaining and making the company look stupid.

For a comparison, we have no idea whether Episode 3 is almost done, half-done, or not even started. Then if they do end up doing it, they will announce it one day and say that it will be released in 2011 or whatever. And then there will be a delay until 2012 and then eventually after missing 2-3 more deadlines, they will release it at some point. But Valve is professional and a big company and they have loads of experience with this stuff, and even they cannot predict anything accurately at all.

So it makes sense that the Black Mesa team can’t say anything for certain. I’m sure they could tell us that it won’t be released within the next 3 weeks or whatever, but maybe it’s not worth it for them. Maybe they’re really close to the release, and they have been really close for the past 2 months, but still cannot predict whether it will be done in 1 week or 1 months. This kind of stuff is very complicated and impossible to predict.

No more than now.

Most people think like this i presume:

Knowing nothing and thinking: oh, it might be ready tomorrow. Let’s check the site: damned, nothing, annoyed, possibly bitching. Next day, check, nothing, annoyed, possibly bitching.

Knowing it’s definitely not due in x months: ok, annoying for a moment, then wait x months with little bitching of the usual haters, then see what devs have to say and possibly repeat.

It would be something easy to do and it wouldn’t be a lie.

I support everything you’ve written, I’ve reached the same conclusions some days ago.
Although in my opinion the best thing to do is to suspend the cafeteria.

no it would be like this:

devs: mod will not be ready within next six months
“fans”: okay
“fans” six months later: wtf it’s not done yet? you lied! everyone here sucks

Things are not better now. And will not improve

@Burbinator: Okay, that is true, those “fans” will be haters no matter what.

It would be something nice though for the die hard fans who don’t care about the bitching and will look over it anytime. Although you won’t tell me they are never annoyed by the anticipation.

Something else: The devs should never ridicule the crazy speculations, too, because doing so would make them quite arrogant, for all we know it can be ready tomorrow, we can’t know that…

These forums have a sarcastic, caustic wild west quality of “if you can’t ride the horse, don’t join the posse” or “if it’s too hot, stay out of the kitchen”
Remember, The devs owe us nothing, no updates, no release schedule, not even these forums that some of us love to talk shit on. No one is forcing anyone to be here, or to read these forums, or to be sitting in their bed with dick in hand ready to fap at the slightest possibility of a release date. Just look at all the FU comments when they missed the ‘09 date. OMGwhenwillt3rebareleezedate gets old fast. And yes, saying BMS is not the greatest thing since fire on the BMS forums deserves a sarcastic e-humor reaming and flaming with ZERO mercy . Maybe it will help people develop sarcastic skill so they can retort instead of being an elementary school wuss and complaining about how mean people are :’(
The devs are making a “faithful” recreation of HL1. Will they make some things better? will they “fix” xen? It doesn’t matter. They will do what they do, and If you, or anybody does not like it or complains about it, those collective folks can wipe the collective sand from their vajajays, collectively STFU and then go out and with their newfound collective of de-sanded folks, and build a 40+ person dev team and spend 5 or six years of free time working on a game while a new collective of sandy vaginas complains about how they are “owed” something for being a fanboy or girl.
For some of us who have been waiting since the end of 2006 or longer to see this completed, and who understand and empathize with the devs about the sheer volume of work that is being done, tend find it frustrating that people who have nothing to do with this project get so demanding, on the internet, where they can say things they would never say in person, try to hack a devs account, spread leaked content and be all around unpleasent.
Does that make sense, or do i need to get more Vagisil?

Either way, no matter what happens, no one can do any harm on here. So stuff needs to be taken much less seriously. It’s just a forum, if you don’t like stupid comments, just ignore them. We will all play the mod when it comes out, it will be free, so there is not even the danger of “losing customers”. The developers do what they want to do, and we say what we want to say, isn’t that the way it’s supposed to be? People complain, so what? It’s a forum, they could just shut it down if they really didn’t like it. And what if they complain, it’s not hurting anyone, no one has to pay attention, no one has to take advice or respond to stupid questions.

I’m not defending or attacking anyone, I’m just saying that I don’t think this is a big deal. The forum people should relax and not get upset about this stuff. It’s just a game! After all, we’re all just waiting for something really awesome. It’s a good thing. Enjoy the excitement and make the best of it until then!

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT??!

https://www.watching-grass-grow.com/ is better than this topic

IM GONNA SET THAT PAGE AS HOMEPAGE NAO

It grew a bit! Did you see that?

sure. that’s why i “complain”.

how about answering in a proper, normal tone, instead of trying to insult me? did i hurt your feelings? talk about first graders…

these kind of replies are unfortunately very common in what used to be a nice forum. but i guess being a shithead at some point started to be synonymous with “cred” in here.

and about complaining; i don’t… i was merely stating a fact.

back when this was a welcoming forum i used to be pretty active, then i left for a few years. came back, joined the translation project. saw where this forum was heading and thought to myself “fuck it”. i’m kinda glad i did.

I’m not one of those fans that demand the mod to come out. i’m at an age where i don’t see games as important anymore. and a half-life remake sure as hell won’t change that. i peek in now and then to see if the forums has anything new and exciting to offer. So claiming that i’m an outsider demanding a release date is pretty dumb, i’ve been here just as long as you, and i have all the right in the world to state my opinion on where this mod and these forums are going.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
