Why Black Mesa doesn't support Mac/Linux Platforms

Does that mean it would be possible to (with permission) port BM’s features to HL2? All that requires is your source code, right?

I think we want to have our changes out with the BSD license. Not sure yet. The answer is yes to you question though I don’t know why you’d want to.

That’s great news, thank you!

I know I’d love to have the camera head-roll and the weapon-splatter.

Yeah, there’s a couple of features that I’d like to see ported to HL2, if possible.

Source SDK 2007 is now installable under OS X. I have recently done so.

I know that BMS dev team does not like to be pushed, but when you say “next release”, do you mean the release of the 2nd part of BMS, including Xen, or there is any other release planned before that? Note that my question is about what, not about when.

Thanks,

Next release would be the steam release, I think.

dont think they allowed to talk about what or when due to that nda

I’d imagine Xen will be in the next release, though. I think people’d go nuts if it wasn’t

Now, since SDK Base 2007 is available for Mac, does that mean that BM can now run on Mac?

no it doesnt, BM is still compiled for windows in .dll form and mac uses some other file type cant remember i think it was .dylib

so for it to work the source code needs tobe recompiled on mac, but for that compilation to work, they likely have to fix some core OS functions by reaplcing them with mac equavalents.

but likely they also need to make other adjustments. things like filepaths, build scripts and who knows what

BM is in the process of being ported (or already has been ported) to Source 2013. This means that mac/linux support definitely is possible in the next release. It will have to be recompiled, but from what I know of working with Source it shouldn’t be terribly difficult.

IIRC, they’ll make the source code available for third parties to port it

Are you talking about the BM team or Valve? The BM team specifically hired (for lack of a better word) a linux dev, and linux/mac are relatively similar platforms. Valve has already released all non-proprietary code of the Source engine for all 3 platforms ( https://github.com/ValveSoftware/source-sdk-2013 )

BM, think I saw a dev post that

I think you accidentally a word there, Bur.

nope, read again :stuck_out_tongue:

I think I saw a developer post “that*”

*that = “IIRC, they’ll make the source code available for third parties to port it”

not my clearest post ever, I’ll admit

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
