"We've Got Hostiles!" Uncut

What are you even on about this time, Max? :meh:

I think he enjoys being banned.

Hi Open Source Forever. It’s cool that you’re expanding this chapter. I’ll do the best I can to help you with this.

I think it would be best if you change the topic title to “We’ve Got Hostiles!” Extended Cut to alleviate confusion with TextFAMGUY1’s OaR & ST Uncut.

So the cut is extended?

Black Mesa: Vent Crawling - the Beer Is a Lie Edition.

It’s just a suggestion.

Thanks for the ideas, Erik! I just need help using Hammer. Which button do I press 1st? The map is open.

I would, but I can’t find the “change thread title” button.

You’ll probably want to start experimenting with the brush tool. https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Your_First_Map Should help you get the basics down.

That’s alright. I’ll help you out as much as I can regardless.

“popcorn” may be interesting to see what comes from this  “in the foreseeable future…” I mean, a year from now, hopefully you will have something done to show after all :zip:

What brush size should I submit?

That’s optional. Again, experiment with making your first room. It should teach you quite a few things.

Really? That was necessary?

Necessary? No. It’s not an useful remark, I admit, tho it wasn’t meant to discourage him in any way, I really am curious as how will a vent shaft mod turn out. For the rest, considering it’s his first time doing something like this and it may turn out into something “grander” one should expect that since these things take time.
@OSF, my apologies for any possible offense done.

I made a room. For some reason, when I switch to 3D, the stuff disappears when I zoom out past a certain point.

That’s just the Hammer draw distance kicking in.

I’d hold off on editing the BM maps for a bit, take a few days to a week to get used to Hammer by doing tutorials and experiments. If you try to go from no experience to working in the BM team’s complex maps, you’re going to get a headache. Just keep working through the basic tutorials, and read up on things like tool textures and visgroups.

Then, once you’ve absorbed all that and are comfortable with the interface, map your heart out.

Thanks for the advice.

Pretty much. If you happen to have Portal 2, get the authoring tools for that. It would be a very good starting point for someone learning Hammer.

I would try experimenting around by making your own levels before moving on to something as big as a redesign of WGH.

A few problems with that:

  1. I don’t own Portal 2
  2. None of the video game shops within walking distance of my house sell PC games (I loathe playing games on consoles, as the extras-online gaming, mods, custom content systems-will only work on PC or Mac).
  3. My personal electronic banking device doesn’t work with online payments, despite being activated
  4. My parents won’t let me borrow their credit cards
  5. They don’t make Steam gift cards. This last issue is weird, as Steam is a popular enough service that VALVE Software Corporation really has no excuse not to authorize Steam Gift cards.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
