Do you guys outside of the US use “gay” and “fag” as something other than a gay slur?
Or are you guys intentionally taking the term offensively?
Gay is an old term to mean happy, fag is slang for a cigarette

My response to your post, as not to derail that thread:
In the UK, a ‘fag’ commonly refers to a cigarette, however even you must admit that the insult is derived from the derogatory term for a homosexual - just because a word is used ‘liberally’ doesn’t make it good! I couldn’t use the word ‘nigger’ to describe someone who uses drugs, or is violent (as Chris Rock alluded to in his famous stand-up skit) and defend it by saying “It’s OK because he’s not black”!
No, it isn’t. It’s not a racial slur, it’s a slur against those with differing sexual orientations.
The word ‘gay’, in it’s original meaning, is defined as ‘happy’ or ‘jovial’, so to describe something (or someone) as ‘gay’ is actually quite a positive thing. It’s understandable then, why the homosexual community would adopt this moniker to describe themselves. Unfortunately, people who have an innate dislike of homosexuality, deformed the word to be negative. Hence, you may not see it as offensive or derogatory, but it is.
Frankly, the levels of stupidity in this post impress me. Let’s say your playing Modern Warfare, and you get tagged by a grenade. Now, your immediate response (as you’ve already pointed out) is to call the person who fragged you a ‘grenade fag’. You now exist in two universes: one where the person simply takes it on the chin, because he isn’t gay, or where he tells you that’s offensive because he is gay. You don’t know whether or not what you’ve just said is offensive until you get confirmation of his sexual orientation! Hah, I’m tempted to call this theorem ‘Winged’s Fag’!
