I just look at the picture closely and say you have a slim seagate/maxim HDD. My guess is: Either it’s fried or you have it since less than six years. I could swear the buggers fry the day their warranty goes off, which is six years.
there is only 2 working HDD’s in that pile, the bottom one, and a 10GB IBM laptop HDD. The top one is an ipod video HDD that died from unknown causes (the ipod itself could still work, I just need a new HDD)

At work this summer we had to destroy our clients data, so I got to go into the back with a hammer and the drive and hammer it until the disk was bent.
All you had to do was format it. :facepalm:
The only way to be sure is to zero fill or hit it with a hammer.

I’m sure the FBI has some badass device that can decode hard drives after they’ve been smashed to bits.
Formatted drives can be recovered. I’m sure the FBI could recover that data, but until we hammer them, we can’t be positive nothing can be recovered.
I somehow doubt the FBI would be able to recover data from a HDD that is smashed to bits. To be sure, zero fill and THEN hit it with a hammer.
Hard drives don’t really smash. When you hit them with a hammer they just bend. I’m sure if I kept going, I could have broken pieces off, but once the disk is bent, it’s done. If it’s just bent, I’m sure there’s a way to flatten it out enough to read it again if left unscrubbed (for the most part).
Also, the method we used for wiping the disks is used by the Department of Defense.

FUCK I did hard drive recovery on this HDD I had sitting in my cupboard for over 2 years. I load up the program, and it shows thatall my files are still there, right where I left them, great! I save them all on my normal HDD, but the files are all fucked up, I open up a .mov and its like 50 other random video files have been mixed into it, random bits of porn mixed in with 3 second snippets of viva la bam and songs I downloaded from youtube, WHAT THE FUCK. All the files are like this, none of them can be read. The only one I found slightly intact was a shortcut for portal but even then the colours on it were inverted. What the fuck is this?
