The Vortigaunts' Posture

bump

I’d totally try it if I could, even if I had to follow a tutorial the entire way. Unfortunately modelling programs tend to require payment, which I assume is why modellers themselves also ask for payment to do things.

You could try Blender, it’s free.

Got it, I shall report back if I succeed with anything other than sheer confusion.

First impressions: I have no idea what is happening. And now I’m being dragged away to game with some friends.

Haha. I think Blender has some tutorials on their site, although they’re mainly for beginners.

MAI TIEM TO SHIEN
(In all seriousness I have used blender, tried to make a Spy knife replacement for the steam workshop. I lost all my motivation because rigging a cardboard fork onto a man in a pinstriped suit and a ski mask proved too much work for me.)

Any progress?

It would seem no one has the skill to do it, and those that do don’t seem to be interested. Bumping the thread every other week isn’t really changing that.

Again, it’s really an AI problem rather than a modelling one. We can’t fix the AI without access to the source code.

It’s not the AI,it’s the animations.
The AI calls the animations.

I’m pretty sure a modeller could just switch the names of the animations.

Just nobody (even the black mesa devs) care to do so.

One key thing to note is that the “new” animations are Episode 2 animations, and Episode 2 content isn’t included in the SDK as far as I’m aware, so it might be some legal grey area for them to distribute them as part of the mod. But I’m not sure, I’ve seen far worse distributions.

That isn’t it, the Vortigaunt model they use is the EP2 model.

Hm, I’ve just made an attempt myself, though N++ doesn’t seem to wish to compile it. Nor StudioMDL. Also, I’m not entirely sure of what I’m doing, so even if it does compile I’d probably just have broken something.

I Like The Vortigaunt’s Posture

I bet he feels fabulous~!

Current animations also come from Episode 2.

Sorry to revive such a long-dead thread like this, but I felt it was worth it.

Presumably, the only thing that has to be done to fix this issue is a very small edit to the “vortigaunt_slave” model. Just swap the names of the “Idle01” and “ActionIdle” animations. Black Mesa Vortigaunts should look alert all the time anyway, considering the situation they suddenly find themselves in.

I’d be more than happy to fix this myself and upload it for everyone, except I’m still in the early stages of learning how to do anything with models. Does anyone know how to edit final model files? You probably have to convert it into SMDs and back again, only I haven’t yet found a way to decompile models into their source files. I can look at models with Source SDK’s model viewer, but that’s about it. It must be possible, though… Right?

EDIT: I’ve decompiled and recompiled “vortigaunt_anims.mdl” using every different method I could find. Most just failed, and the one that did sort of work completely messed up the model in-game. This is probably why no one else has fixed this already. :stuck_out_tongue:

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
