Well, I got away with a damn, and in my Max Payne 3 review, the editor said he almost cut the phrase “[the game] took everything that was great about Max Payne 2 and flushed it down the toilet like last night’s blow during a DEA raid” and warned me about that in the future. I was trying to be cheesy, like the self-parodic “Dick Justice” sequences on the TV in Max Payne 2, where they used such amazing lines as “It was raining as if all the angels in heaven decided to take a piss at the same time. When you’re in a situation like mine, you can only think in metaphors.”

I thought this was supposed to be a game that celebrated the 20 year history of the franchise, not dragging it’s absolute worst moments into the limelight! It also figures that the Crisis City levels are the worst in the entire game in terms of design as well. SO WHY THE FUCK ARE THEY THERE?!?
Give me Mystic Cave. Oil Ocean. Sky Rail. Gene Gadget. Rail Canyon. Egg Fleet. Fuck, you could give me Labyrinth Zone instead for all I care (and I fucking HATED Labyrinth Zone). But you picked a stage from FUCKING SONIC 2K6. WHY WHY WHY.
I guess I should count my lucky blessings that it wasn’t Westopolis or something. (Because Shadow the Hedgehog shouldn’t count as a main series Sonic title ANYWAY.) But fucking hell. The rest of the game is so unbelievably good. Speed Highway rocks now. Sky Sanctuary is very slick, too. And my very favorite of the bunch in both 2D and 3D hybrid modes, City Escape, is an absolute masterpiece of Sonic map design. And then we had to go shit it up with fucking Crisis City. Why the hell couldn’t we have gotten Hot Crater instead? (Yes, I’d rather have a Sonic Advance 2 level port. Why? Because Sonic Advance 2, despite being REALLY fucking hard, was still a proper good Sonic game that handled well, and it introduced Cream the Rabbit. Considering she is in the game, that should totally have been included.)
So yeah, FUCK YOU SONIC 2K6 LEVEL PORT. YOU FUCKING SUCK AND I HATE YOU. PLEASE DIE IN YOUR OWN FIRES.

Bear in mind, the rest of the game is uncharacteristically good for a 3D Sonic title. It’s easily the best of the series this decade, far and away. If they keep with a similar gameplay and visual direction for subsequent games, Sonic does have a good shot at being a worthwhile series to play again.
As for why I still play them, well, Sonic 1 and 2 were my “gateway games,” the very first games I played on the Sega Genesis. I still have my '89 Genesis (it’s older than me) and I still play games on it once in a while. So call it misplaced loyalty.
