The point with the german Sinn (sense) and Bedeutung (meaning) is very good.
The sense of my life is to enjoy myself so much while helping others that I don’t have the time to ask myself this very question. The “meaning” of my life is probably non-existant, as there is no deeper truth (interpretans) behind my existence apart from my very existence (Agnostic in public, Christian in private). Signs can have meaning, letters, books, cultural products in general, but not human.
Although.
If you saw me as a sign of previous reproductive activity of my parents, you might say that my meaning points towards my parents and their reproductive act . That would mean that the meaning of every human being is reproduction. My parents’ meaning would point to their ancestory etc. etc. In consequence we arrive at a time when my ancestors had no capability to ask or answer such a question, due to lack of language or reflection.
Thus ‘meaning’ is not relevant in order to live. The reason why we ask it, is because we have reached a state of awareness that allows us to ask the question, and because we live in societies that do not satisfy our basic needs like affection, warmth, touch, good food and leisure time.
Well I’m not a inch smarter now. The meaning of life is probably to live in order ask yourself from time to time what the meaning is.

Why does everything need a reason? Finding reasons for things it so innate to us that we feel that everything needs one, especially maybe when there really is no reason. If a serial killer answers “I don’t know” to the question “Why do you kill people?”, we would be perfectly content with reasoning that said serial killer kills people because said serial killer is a serial killer, not that there is no reason for the serial killer to kill people. Sometimes I’d like to believe that we are all part of a giant video game or simulation of some sort that was manufactured by a group of scientists, who had gone by the names of the Greek gods. Then they started leaving the project, growing bored and irritated at what has become of humanity. Then there was only. He decided to take full responsibility of the simulation himself, becoming the one God that many worship. He believes he could eliminate all the evil that presided in this simulated humanity, but have many many years of trying to do this, he decided that he couldn’t do this on his own. So then he had a son, whom he let grow up in the simulation, until he was old enough to take over the project himself. His son was more benevolent and was welcomed more by the simulated human populace. And here we are today.
