Surface Tension Uncut - Re-Adding Cut Areas/Scenes (Expansion Project)

Well done textfamguy I am glad you are nearly at the final of your project I lool forward to your final release.

Sorry I dropped out from continued feedback but my new build PC was not stable and had a bad stick of Ram that kept blue screening me out but anyway I am glad you did a real good job on this

2 thumbs up

Well, playing Surface Tension RC1 and I think it’s safe to say with your additions Black Mesa now officially replaces HL1 for me

Y U NO like Zen?

Xen is fine, but seeing as how there’s no BM equivalent to compare it to yet, of what exists, I prefer BM.

Very very great now! I LOVE the new lighting in the furnace room… its excellent…very perfect… almost… in this corner the shadows are not aligned perfect… i dont know, if this is fixable at all… just wanted to point it out.

Then in the next map, where you crawl in the garage and leave barney behind, barney should be positioned more right… so he can see you better and you him when he calls you farewell, and it would be more logical… i also added a picture for that.

then i have a completely different point: i dont like the gasworks-hall very much, i like this part, where i made a screenshot you can see. but the rest of the hall i dont like… its too big and empty somehow… you sould make it half the size or so… i dont like the road in the hall. make it more claustrophobic like it seems on this screenshot… i love barneys office in the gasworks. i dont like the ‘‘gas-truck’’, since it looks very very improvised… its a military truck with a gas tank tucked on… very ugly… better remove it completely. thats my opinion.

then at the very end maybe someone could tell whats on that foto… i cant recognize it…

cheers

Downloaded file works perfectly here.

Could you try downloading it again?

Text,
You haven’t been around for a while. Glad to see that you’ve finally taken our advice and are taking a break. You definitely deserve one!

With “awhile” you mean two days, right? :stuck_out_tongue:

He can take three days, but no more than that.

^Actually, he can. It’s his project, he can take off how long he needs. I suspect it’s due to finals around in the UK now, we had them here in the US this past week. Don’t be surprised if this project is postponed for at least a week.

I think you’ll find he was joking, mate. It had nothing to do with finals, I’m just a bit burned out from mapping recently. A nice relaxed weekend and now I’m back for more. The next RC should be ready quite soon. Quite a few changes for the better, one or two “big” ones from an aesthetic perspective, but you can see all that in the changelog.

Corner shadows not being aligned isn’t really something I can fix - the lightmaps are aligned perfectly. It’s just the way Source handles the lighting/shadowing. It doesn’t look that bad.

I positioned Barney to the left for a reason - he doesn’t actually say that. It’s just a sound file being played. Was MUCH easier to implement. Besides, there’s loads of Xen Infestation blocking your view anyway, even if I’d moved him to the right you wouldn’t be able to see him properly.

Yeah, it might be a bit big and empty, but it’s passed the stage where I can do anything major about it now. It’s already got frame issues, adding anything more will tank the framerate. Just assume that the more open areas are used for transportation. One is a walkway, one is the road.

As for the military truck carrying the gas, that isn’t an issue either. Think a bit deeper, I built a mini little “story” into the gasworks. The HECU were clearly doing something in the gasworks. They’ve set up a little emplacement. They have an M35 and an M1075 there, clearly hastily set up to contain some gas. Where they intended on taking it, who knows. But they met resistance. It looks like there was a serious battle between the HECU and the Aliens, and some security guards got muddled up in it somehow too. At some point, perhaps during the battle or after it, an Apache came crashing through the roof. The fact that all the setup looks rushed is because that’s the look I was going for.

I’ve been trying to implement this for a while, but Source is VERY finicky about bullet penetration, and the walkway is 8 units thick.

Hah, do I know how that feels. I spent most of the weekend with a group of friends to go on a road trip down to Warsaw VA to see a good friend of ours. Got back and went to a Masonic function before ending the night with watching The Hobbit in theaters.

Uni already hit the break for you or are ya still wrapping up finals?

Sounds like a lot of fun.

Uni’s done. Last week was my last week. At my university we actually don’t have any exams until June, but we get lots of coursework and essays due during term time, some of which count towards our final mark, so that’s where most of my work time lies.

@Dadster - just so you know, I read over your big feedback post, and I’m addressing what I can. I won’t reply as I’ll be here for an hour and I want to get some mapping done, but I read it. About 50% of what you listed are things I will/can change.

Lighten up, Chickenprotector. It was a joke!

What do you think about making the sniper take more damage text? I know we all argued for the back to be filled in and got the invisible wall thing, but that was more of a problem with firing multiple shots and any one could work or all of them couldn’t. Now that that’s fixed I do think it could stand to be a bit harder, maybe even scaling with the game difficulty if possible so 1 rocket for easy 2 for medium 3 for hard.

Edit: also forgot to add that when playing through your maps in the campaign you tend to end up with a lot of rockets. You don’t really need the rockets for the LAV fight since the aliens blow it up almost every time now and the abrams gets destroyed by the manta ray anyways and then you get more by the sniper so you end up going into forget about freeman and being able to just easy mode rocket every threat in the chapter with spare ammo. You get a lot more rockets for the fight with the Abrams when you come out of the sewers anyways.

Don’t like it, at all. Would be very inconsistent with Black Mesa, not to mention it wouldn’t make any sense. You can’t have it both ways. It’s either easy the way it is now with him being shootable, which is something I never really wanted anyway but only put in because the community was complaining about it, or you have him not shootable and difficult like he was before. There’s no real middle ground here.

I personally liked it when you couldn’t easily kill him (although it lacked cover in that version) but I’ll happily take this version, I’ll just opt to purposely not blow him up

TextFAMGUY1, have you considered putting Surface Tension Uncut on ModDB once you’re finished? I’m sure a ton of people would appreciate your hard work, as it really is great

Why did you made Barney an old guy? Did he got a a very big plastic operation in HL2?

I don’t know if you saw my post about subtitles TextFAMGUY1 as you didn’t write any comment about it. So here’s the link :

That is probably because he is a Barney, not the Barney.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
