So, no matter what I do here, there are always more soldiers than anything I have is able to handle. What am I supposed to do to get past them all?

When the osprey appears, you take it out before it can drop more soldiers.

After encountering the 2nd gargantua i ran out of the tunnel and got up the tower where the radio keeps hinting for you to call in an airstrike…

The monitor on which you have to order the airstrike is kind of buggy for me. theres a crosshair already there and i can barely see the crosshair im actually using to place the strike. When i do place the strike the red marker is also hard to see. Then nothing happens…

Ive tried calling it in multiple times on multiple load ins i even ran around the map but nothing seems to work. Has anyone gotten this far and can help me?

You need to press the big transparent ‘Fire’ button on the bottom of the map after marking the target. That will call the airstrike.

Oh thanks… i kept thinking the bright red button on the bottom right was what i was supposed to press

Well, I’ve been attempting this fight for the past hour and still am unable to beat it. I get the rocket launcher, then tend to hide behind the ammo crates a slight ways back into the cave. I go through the first 5 rockets, usually without taking a hit, but whenever I make the run to the rocket ammo, I usually lose all my suit armor, and by the time I’m at a hiding place (the rock to the right most times) I am taking damage by the strafing apache.

Any tips or hints for getting past this fight?

You have ammo for the gauss gun? Charge that up while it’s firing at you when yo run out of rockets, as soon as it stops firing, pop up at take your blasts.

Well, theres the fatal flaw… gauss gun is out. I had thought about that myself, just take a couple charge shots and call it good, but no. So far I have managed to make 9 rockets hit the chopper and it still wont go down.

100% sure your rockets are hitting? I think it’s supposed to only take 7 or 8. If not you may have to relocate to a new cover spot. Or lower the difficulty for the fight.

I understand that having the gauss gun ammo would definitely help, but you pick up the rocket launcher specifically for this fight… thus it SHOULD be nearly as effective as the gauss gun at taking out the helicopter… it seems kinda broken in comparison to the original HL1 (which I play through probably every other year) if you can’t manage to take out the chopper with the weapon that is meant to do so.

the rockets hit, I see the explosion on the body of the chopper itself. The difficulty is only on normal, but if I have to lower it, well, I guess I have to lower it.

Heh, well that did it… Lowered to normal and the chopper took 4 hits and was done  Thanks for the help, still irks me that I couldn’t do it on the higher difficulty though.

There were two spots while playing on Hard difficulty in Surface Tension that I found to be a bit frustrating and I’m wondering how you guys dealt with them.

The first was right after the cliff face section where you have to come up out of the sewer pipes and face the first tank. I couldn’t get out of either of the two forward tubes without getting completely destroyed by the HECU. I tried tossing grenades all over from inside the pipe, peeping out and sniping them with the crossbow and everything else. I think I reloaded about 20 times at this part. There is a third section of the sewer pipes that takes you back behind the tank where there’s a lot of rocket ammo, but I found I couldn’t get into that part without getting killed by the exploding barrel they throw down at you and if I tried to trigger that and then run back and wait the HECU would always gun me down.

The second was shortly after the giant security ammo locker room part. You drop down from a hole in the floor and two vortigaunts instantly blast you. I killed them easily enough, but then a ton of HECU come in an endless wave from the Osprey. I found I couldn’t even get up the small ramp without getting shot to death no matter how many I killed. I tried crouching and walking up next to the wall, but they were literally shooting me through the wall at this part and constantly forcing me to retreat back into the little garage area with only a tiny corner to hide in.

Please share your tactics for these parts.

you have to kill the osprey. This is the only “infinite enemy” area in the whole game

First part, I take the tedious strategy of peeking out of one hole, crossbowing one grunt, then pressing spacebar to jump back down as fast as possible. Then I choose another random hole, crossbow another, repeat, repeat, repeat. It takes a while but that’s the safest way to do it, I’ve found.

Second part, You really need to take down the Osprey ASAP. Launch rockets at it until it dies. Otherwise, you’re screwed. Don’t even try to cross the pad if you haven’t blown it up yet. On the bright side, it doesn’t reinforce grunts until it completes a circle.

I think We’ve Got Hostiles also has an Osprey area. You can’t take that one down though.

Just save after each jump you make then, so you never have to redo them.

IMO this part is more fun than the original. It actually stumped me for a while, whereas the original was pretty linear, and even abusably easy if you did your jumps right.

Part 1. Satchels. Lots and lots of satchels.
Part 2. Spam rockets at the osprey as soon as you fall down, tanking the damage from the vorts (you can kill them if you really want, but be quick). If you are fast enough, it should get about 1/2 waves max down before it dies. Then the marines and the agrunts should fight for a while, with the winner severely weakened

I did it in one go.

Just remember you have to destroy the box on the elevator!
