So, what’s the deal with school buses in America? Do the schools themselves own them or is it a contract with external transport companies? And is the yellow school bus an exclusive American thing?
Here in Portugal, the schools either do contract with the public transport company or the city hall’s own bus fleet.
In my town’s particular case, it’s both.
Public bus company for student transport from and to other villages and town hall’s own bus fleet for transport within the town itself.

The schools own the buses usually, and pay people to manage the fleet and drive them. If they don’t own the buses they essentially rent them out. They are always yellow, though.
And AFAIK they’re used in Europe too.

I believe, as it’s been stated, bus shops are typically owned/funded by the Board of Education around here. The only problem is with my location, we have one of the most poorly funded school systems in the country. So all of the stuff we use is 20-30 years old, and has no sign of being replaced any time soon
