They’re Squiers, but not Affinity.

Hang on, and I shall take a pic.

Leaning against my beautifully made bed:

Headstocks:

I have a shop near me, and the guy who owns it will fix the action for me for free, while I wait. Unfortunately my bass needs the action adjusted a lot. Damn New England winters.

edit: no worries about the bed… mine makes yours look professionally made… :stuck_out_tongue:

The closest music shop to me is 45 miles away, and they charge a minimum of $50 for servicing. My dad’s friend fixed my tele’s action for free, as he’s played guitar for 30 years.

I got the tele and strat from my friend Jake for free when he got his Schecter Omen-6.

EDIT: I take that back, actually, the closest guitar shop to me is the Randy Wood’s Guitar Shop, about 25 miles away, but he’s extremely expensive.

Well, the general problem with Squiers is that they’re built with cheaper, less sturdy materials in every part of the guitar.

Buying a Squier can be compared with buying a lottery ticket, you might get really lucky and get some of the better ones (I’ve heard Squiers that sound ridiculously amazing), but generally you’ll get a mediocre guitar, and often even pure shit.

If you want cheaper guitars, you’re better off checking the Japanese and/or Mexican Fenders, you’ll pay about double of what you pay for a Squier (and half of what you pay for an American), but you’ll actually get a very solid guitar with proper hardware (but of course, there’s still the chance of it being shit as well).

My CIJ Jazzmaster was the first guitar I ever bought myself ($990 or so), but before that, I had a cheap Indian-made Jackson, I went down there (musicstore, not India) with my brother (he owed me one due to a lost bet) with a budget of $300. I played a bunch of Squiers, Epiphones and a Jackson, and for that priceclass, the Jackson outranked the others by far… But in retrospect, that one kinda blows compared to my Jazzmaster as well (especially now that’s it’s pimped out with vintage-spec pups).

Well, as my edit says, I didn’t pay for either. The tele has an awesome tone, actually.

My ESP LTD Viper-400 does not cooperate with downtuning well. I really wanted this sick Washburn I was looking at but it was upwards on the scale of $1,300. I played on one at a guitar shop in another town and it was so easy to just rip it on. Such smooth action and tone.

I must say that I think half of the problem with the tone on my Viper is the fact I am horrible at getting a good tone out of my amp. I rock out at home on an Ibanez TBX150R and it’s a great amp, but I manage to completely FUBAR the tone every time.

Advice for the future then

Obviously squiers aren’t as nice as more expensive guitars, but they aren’t nearly as shitty as most people think, at least according to the guitar techs I’ve talked to.

I’d love to have a Schecter C-1 Hellraiser with a Floyd Rose, but I don’t have that kind of money.

Well, like I said, it’s a bit of a lottery ticket. But a proper setup will do wonders for most of them… Others are just downright useless. It all depends on who/when/where/what made them.

But tbh, only reason I’d buy a Squier these days, is to use it as a test guitar for future guitar mods (or possibly just use the body and neck for other projects), wont often find those 2 things for $150 or so.

Edit: I hated intonating and setting up the Jackson (with Floyd Rose) I mentioned before. I generally just let the guitartech at the shop do it, because I just couldn’t be arsed to sit down and set it up properly (and it only cost $25 or so)

I’d love to have a J-bass with some flatwounds on it, but I don’t have that kind of money and don’t plan to any time in the foreseeable future.

Bought this one two weeks ago  Got some flatwounds laying around, waiting for the first time I restring it (would also be my first time using flatwounds).

I’ve never been a big fan of 4-string basses. 5-string all the way with me, if I ever get one.

Old-ish picture (well, a year and a half ago). Jackson has since been sold, J-Bass has been added, Line6 amp has been sold (replaced by pre-amp, computer and 2x 100W speakers), 4 pedals have been added (EHX Chorus, Reverb, Fuzz and a Wah), JM got pimped, spanish guitar (in bag) is in for repairs (cracked headstock and loose tuning peg)

I want a Peavey Vypyr 70w amp. :frowning:

I was seriously considering getting a badass amp as well, but I figured that its not really worth the money, considering that I can rehash an old hi-fi system, use it as amp for my computer and go through there. All in all, I got pretty much every possible tone in the world, for a grand total of $80 or so ($60 for pre-amp, $20 for some cables and jacks to make the hi-fi fit my computer line-out.

Then again, I don’t play in a band and don’t play gigs, so I have no real need of an amp/stack anyway.

I play in a band, just as the drummer. Our guitarist (Previously mentioned, friend Jake) has a Peavey Vypyr 30w that is capable of shaking my house, and driveway when the volume is on 4, and it goes up to 13.

I declare this thread officially hijacked.
