The actual cause of death is liver failure, which may or may not be a result of the flesh eating bacteria he caught from the wound of the spider bite.
I don’t deal with this kind of thing ever (though we do have those spiders in this area), but maybe it is one of those things that if treated early it doesn’t have nearly the same effect as if you didn’t really notice it in the first place, and left it until later, and by the time you did get around to it the damage was already near irreparable?
