General Xen Chit-Chat Thread

I ported Nihilanth into Blender to show the model better

Yeah okay, that´s just about the creepiest looking thing that I´ve seen in the HL-universe so far. Looks awesome!

Last update added all the gman animation sequence from the endcredits, all the gesture sequences at the bottom are sorted in the same orden of the dialogs and if you speak them you can time the sequences.
Also, teleported pieces of Black mesa, possibly a refrence of the underwater teleporter in Opposing force.
Last edit, theres A LOT of content to be mined, better check it for yourself. Looks like Xen its just on the corner.

So there is update again without any patchnotes? Or is there somewhere on forum?

Some bugs found:

 • Flashlight doesn’t cast shadows, as those torch when u illuminate it, it doesn’t cast shadows either
 • White lines around characters after the resonance cascade, zombies and such all have white outlines
 • Physics on the labcoats and such? When our good old friend Dr. Isaac Kleiner gets up, his coat gets through his whole body, so some kind of clipping issue

Indeed, when I read the WIKI they engineered the fast and the poison one, it’s also possible they took the poison and the fast one and they continued with altering their DNA…

I was curious how you got the gman_gesture animations to work on the gman model? Or could you maybe post a gif of all of the animations? Im curious to see what they all are

I made the last part sequence of the end credits here, last dialogs ended in only hand gestures.

You know what I would like to see in Xen? Some sort of zombie Xenian. All of the zombies we see in-game are human, which is rather odd because humans are not native to that dimension and cannot have served as a reliable host/prey species for headcrabs over most of their evolution. What do they normally zombify instead? Vortigaunts?

I have also pondered this for the longest time.

My theory is that the Nihilanth bred/engineered headcrabs as a means of repelling human interlopers.
This theory is supported by the fact that headcrabs are only seen in xen in the gonarch’s lair in Half-Life 1, and near a human reasearch station in Blue Shift.

I’d just like to say, with Xen seeming to be looming pretty close, that I’m incredibly glad I was able to make a thread where we all could come to talk about Xen theories and leaks, without mods having to bring discussion back on topic.
It’s strange, but it just feels really nice.

As far as headcrabs, I’d like to note that there aren’t many lifeforms actually native to Xen, and it’s entirely possible headcrabs came from a different world, with human-like hosts for them to parasitize, but after migrating, had to adapt to simply consuming smaller prey like Chumtoads, except for the occasional hapless Vort that gets latched.

I see the headcrabs as something pretty similar to a Facehugger, like since they are parasites, as long as the prey has a brain and that they fit around it, they’ll zombify them. (And like in Alien, maybe having a different host results in a variation of their abilities and all?)

Well, headcrabs actively attacked only Bullsquids as could be seen in many locations in HL. Would be cool to see headcrab - modified one  . Spits toxic substance with 0 - 2 baby headcrabs, charges towards player at close distance and when killed with explosive damage, splatters toxic matter all-around.

Yeah, afaik that’s a side effect of a new engine feature they added. Doesn’t work well with Anti-aliasing.

You shouldn’t use MSAA for now. We will implement properly working AA options in the future.

For those interested, here is a comparison between no MSAA and 8x MSAA

So the only difference MSAA makes is only on certain entities (like the chains on those poles)? How are they named in hammer? Are they models or some other type of entities?

oh, MSAA in itself is still working. It’s just that it sometimes creates those weird outlines around objects like on the chains or the MP5. Those are definitely not supposed to be there.

Not what I expected at all, the technology looks Combine-esque which I like, he looks pretty pale, like an Advisor huh?

I don’t think the nihilanth is textured? (I hope not anyway, otherwise I’ll mod the hell out of it)
