General Xen Chit-Chat Thread

What the hell happened to this thread… Let’s get back on track with some meaningful discussions here shall we

So as you guys probably know the devs have mentioned that they’re giving each location in Xen its own theme. We have already seen the underwater/coral reef and the cave theme from the Holiday screenshots (though they could very well be both the same), seen a sneak-peek of some kind of jungle theme and have had a look at what appears to be a fleshy theme like in the original Xen in form of concept art. What other themes do you guys reckon we can expect from Black Mesa Xen? What do you want the Interloper chapters to look like?

I figure that those would be the ‘fleshy’ areas, since it’s a factory and the Xenians use largely organic technology.

I wonder will the fleshy areas have a more skin like matt shine or will it be like tissue shiny and moist.
Like in Doom.

It should be possible now to slightly distinguish themes by skyboxes that are already released in files.

The fleshy areas give me a Giger vibe.

Underwater texture “Tentacle shit water” cracks me up every time I see it, so I guess new boss fight? Or could very well be the texture for the one from the silo.

Post on the steam forums from one of the developers. I thought ya’ll would like this.

Why does he say that acting so suprised? Isn’t that something that he would know from the start, rather than now, one and a half a year after the “do or die” release date? Don’t want to sound rude, but after that much time, I’d like to hear something more than “oh our xen chapters are longer than the original”

Huh? The release was dated to December 2017, so it’s “just” 6 month to late so far, not 18.

I think you might’ve missed their “Bad News, Good News” update from November 24th 2017.

No, i didn’t. I also wasn’t originally the one referring to “do-or-die deadline” either.

Oh, I see. Misinterpreted your post.

I’m mostly active on forums where it is forbidden to quote posts made directly before your own answer, so i didn’t. I fixed it now though.

There was absolutely zero surprise in what I wrote. I’m not sure at all where you’re getting that from. If you look at the thread, I wrote it in response to the typical “Xen is a few maps” type post. It’s a fact that would interest people who say that Xen is “just a few maps”, because it is very distinctly not that.

It’s also half a year after our “do or die” release date, not one and a half. No need to unnecessarily stretch facts to make us look bad, reality already does a decent enough job of that for us.

You guys are still rock stars in my book for hanging in there and working so hard on this. Of course, I can say this because I was there behind the scenes for many years seeing the conversations, updates, fixes, reports and various directives on a DAILY BASIS, week after week, month after month, year after year.

But no matter how many times it is said that you guys are still diligently working on it, there will still be a few stragglers that refuse to give up the concept that a) you guys are working on this game full time 40 hours a week b) that the game is done and you are all just fidgeting with a finished game rather than releasing it, and c) in order to be faithful to the fans, you have to post weekly about the stuff you are working on in the game.

Being the crazy red head I am, I am always tempted to ban anyone that feeds into this thinking, but the better mods here hold me back.

Sorry, but on a sold product people can expect more than the usual “we’re only working in our spare time on this and only if we’re up for it, so get lost”-attitude they got when this was a free mod.

I work on the game full-time, as do quite a few team members. That attitude is 100% not present on this team, and you’re pulling it out of your ass to begin with anyway.

I work incredibly hard on this and take a lot of pride in my work. The whole team does. We love Black Mesa and we love this community and we are doing everything in our power to do right by it. The fact that we don’t show our work often doesn’t mean we don’t do any work, and I think it’s a bit silly to think that.

I can understand why you might feel that way, but the reality is it’s just the somewhat unusual nature of the situation. Not many games end up in a position like ours is - with the entire community awaiting the final 30% of the game with baited breath, with it being a sudden and massive shift in gears from the rest of what was before it. We don’t really want to show our progress because we’d like to keep Xen a surprise. We’re showing stuff when we think the time is right and when we’re comfortable with it. There’ll be more to come soon, in fact.

This is not right place for complaints. Most people read about product before buying anything. In case you didn’t noticed, I will drop it here for you:

Early Access Game

“This Early Access game is not complete and may or may not change further. If you are not excited to play this game in its current state, then you should wait to see if the game progresses further in development”

I just want to say thanks again for what you guys have provided. It’s a brilliant game already, one of the greatest “mods” (more like remakes ofcourse) ever made. The beatiful graphics and quality of the maps, animation, voice work and music resulted in the actual feel of the game being very reminiscent of Half-Life, it’s simply great! If I have to wait another 5 years for the Xen to arrive, so be it. I’m sure it’ll be worth the wait! I’ve said it before but please; take all the time you guys need! I’m sure i speak for most fans here that i’d rather have the best developed version of Xen you can possibly make rather than having an early release riddled with problems because you guys feel the pressure to bring it out already. Glad to have been able to support the project by buying it!

I never said that this attitude is present on the team but that it was and that people nowadays can expect more than what they got back in the old days. Did i say that they don’t get more nowadays? No. Did i say that it was a bad or false attitude back then? No. So who is pullig things out of his ass here in the first place?

What is your point at all? I haven’t even complained that it isn’t finished yet. This “community” is even more toxic than Counter Strike’s, jesus!

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
