Wow, it’s cool to see this evolving. Definitely good for a first effort. I’m glad you figured out that pure white lights look awful and unrealistic in a setting like this… a lot of first-timers live in denial of that fact. As a tip for your further lighting endeavors: you look like you’re starting to get the hang of lighting areas pretty well, but try playing around with the Constant parameter of the light entities (by default, the prevailing setting is the Quadratic one). A Quadratic mode of lighting makes the light fall off somewhat more realistically, but it leaves the intense splotches on the ceiling around the lights that you see in your first screenshots and, to a lesser extents, the latest ones on this page. The Constant parameter causes the light to cast a glow in all directions that is - believe it or not - constant. One light with a relatively high “constant” setting (and with Quadratic and Linear set to 0), placed in the center of a room, will brighten the entire room.
I’ll definitely attempt to apply some of that to what I’m doing; I appreciate your help.
I’ve also started lighting the next area:
Floodlights added
Defunct fluorescent lights
Might want to play with those floodlights a little… A bit brighter perhaps? They also tend to give off a harsh, pure white light; if anything with a twinge of blue
Messed with the floodlights. I think they fill the room better now. Also, added railing to the stairs.
Did more work on the map. Transitioning from the building to an outside area.
Stairs:
Hallway and Combine soldier that gives us a shotgun:
Outside area with 3D skybox:
As of now, I’m not happy with how the building and the brick wall look, but improvements will come with time.
You may want to use some of the more detailed pine trees and have them in the actual world rather than the 3D skybox, also making the grass floor a displacement then making it a little less flat would make it look better.
Get some bushes and plants in that enclosed area.
your new avatar is the best thing ever.
and on a related note, get a better computer. I mean, damn, HL2 is 6 years old and it looks ugly on your computer. What is this 800x600 shit?
Or more specifically, 795X599.
:fffuuu:
:awesome:
Yes, my computer sucks. Although, to be fair, I was running it windowed. No clue why the resolution was only 800x600, though.
BBBRRRRRZZZZZZZZZZZMMMMMMMM
Mmm… wide-screen hi-def goodness:
Messed around with the 3D skybox. Added some fog for good measure. Made the grass a displacement. And, just because I’m feeling gracious, here’s a download as well.
I feel like you need to move the skybox back, and have some immediate surroundings, maybe some shorter buildings.
Added combine architecture:
When you kill the soldier that has the shotgun, the door opens and more soldiers attack. That’s right, I learned how to use triggers.
I like how they built an impassible wall right next to a very easily scaleable wall.
What you can’t see is that right outside the brick wall is a moat of lava.
On a more serious note… I better do something about that, because it is rather silly.
On it.
The single barriers would probably be best in pairs as V-shaped constructions… Also not sure why a Combine console would be located outside?
