We just added more horse power! the downloads should be going smooth now.
I have to say that I can’t find any negatives about it. The tracks really do fit perfectly into the HL world. Great job.
The soundtrack is amazing. It is fresh and new, while still giving a Half-Life feel. I am glad that they didn’t just remix the older tracks, otherwise trolls would cry “HE SCREWED IT UP!!!1!!111!”
Excellent job!
It’s a completely new soundtrack. “Nuclear mission jam” is the track form original half-life and it’ll not be included in the mod.
Thats not very good news, its the personification of both half life and half life 2 sound track to me. Unless one of the new tracks follow a simular beat. I havent found it in the sound track i donwloaded? Im not criticizing the work as the sound track is amazing, im just very puzzuled why this track, probably one of the most iconic didnt get remade or left as is?
You can replace BM’s soundtrack with the original Half-Life one. Just move a few files here and there and rename them then you’re done.
None of the original HL music will return. The game is using Nielsen’s music exclusively. If you want to put the old music in, you can through the game’s files, but it won’t be timed as well with the action. After all, Inbound is now three parts long.
It’s just so beautiful. Especially these:
“Inbound Part 2” has a ‘spyish’, ‘secret’ sort of vibe that hits the spot. Perfect for what Inbound effectively is for -for you to go “look at all the cool shit they’ve got hidden in here.”
“Questionable Ethics 1” is my favourite by FAR: it evokes one of my favorite tracks in all videogame OSTs. The “top songs” for games are usually epic, but this is not -it’s “Ezio’s Family” from Assassin’s Creed 2. The main notes in both songs are very, very similar. I don’t know if it was inspired by this AC2 song or not, but I find it very evocative nevertheless.
“Questionable Ethics 2” has a background ambient sound that I cannot pin down, but I would bet my hands that it is somewhere in Half-Life or Half-Life 2, either as an ambient sound or as part of the soundtrack.
“Surface Tension 1” and “Surface Tension 3” are the most similar to the original Half-Life soundtrack, and I imagine that by that late point in the game it will feel pretty nostalgic. Also, they sound very epic and awesome, in the true sense of those two words.
“Forget About Freeman” is by far the most “retro” track of them all. In the beginning it feels a bit like the Spy Hunter theme. Not that it’s similar, especially by the end, but it has the same retro vibe right at the start. It’s actually not one of my favourites really… but it’s so awesome that there is a track like this in the mod.
“End Credits Part 2” is beautiful. No need to add anything else.
And yes, I put them in order of in-game chapters rather than alphabetically. That’s how I arranged them in my Black Mesa playlist -I believe it makes more sense.
Got it, as i said its not really a problem i have with the soundtrack, i dont plan to use the original track since i prefer to play modders work on their own terms just like i would a purchasable game. I guess its just that one song that keeps coming back years after years in my head even if i havent played any half life game since 2008 lol.
All in all: Forget about freeman is my personal favorite track from the mod. Every surface tension also sounds pretty damn nice. Im sure its even better with the music syncing with the events.
Wait, is Nuclear Mission Jam the Valve theme, the post-rocket-launch theme, or the HEV suit theme? Those are the three tracks from HL1 that I can remember off the top of my head.
Its hard to forget it also plays in half life 2, it has another name however.

We created a new game that follows all the primary gameplay and theming of Black Mesa. Like many have said, it’s very different from “Half-Life 1 HD”.
I think the new soundtrack is not only a nice change of pace, but often fits the mood of the game better. Plus, it’s much more fun to developers to remake something new, rather than just touch it up, with hardly any personal signature to it.
PS. I’m actually kinda hoping that people don’t listen to Questionable Ethics 1 yet…only so that you can first play the moment in gameplay that goes along with it. One of my favorite parts of the mod I think.
Yeah, that track is so fucking good. One of the more guitar heavy aspects of the soundtrack. Sounds like there’s some heavy combat in the opening of that chapter…
Great work Joel, donated and all! There was never any doubt. I’ve listened to them all. I think it’s very true to the original. Everything from the spokyness of Inbound to the fast paced action of Surface Tension. I think you’ve really managed to catch the Half-Life feel in the OST, I can’t put my finger on it but it’s there.
My favorite: Forget About Freeman, I would actually want to hear a band playing this kind of music.
Edit: I would really want a track by track guide of the OST with Joel sharing his thoughts about each song. I think it would be really interesting to hear what inspired him in certain areas, why he choose specific elements in his songs, how he made it fit in the HL universe. Stuff like that. There’s certainly some kind of motive with each song. Joel if you’re reading this, is this possible?
Thank you Hubi!
So I’m listening to the soundtrack and its really great. But it feels a lot more rock/metal than anything Half-Life would do. I always associated Half-Life with a very electronic sound. This reminds me a lot of the kind of sound Frank Klepacki (Command & Conquer OSTs) has. Its interesting though because despite this genre stylistic difference it still perfectly fits Half-Life’s tone and ambient feel. This comment applies a lot more to the fast paced action tracks than it does the ambient ones though.
I like how different the soundtrack is from the original score. The original soundtrack by Kelly Bailey still acknowledged the fact that the game it was apart of was an action-packed, science-fiction thrill ride, so it sounded appropriate for the original game’s style. The new score takes itself alot more seriously, as does the mod, so it sounds appropriate for it’s own game as well. I don’t think it’s a good idea to switch music from Half-Life to Black Mesa, or vice versa, since it would sound out of place.
As for my thoughts on the soundtrack itself, it’s AWESOME!
First off, thank you all for all your wonderful comments. You have no idea how nervous I was about releasing it.
Yeah, this would be something I’d do if people are interested in knowing about it. Maybe a QA would be the best way?
