Can't launch on Ubuntu 18.04 & AMD Stoney

The problem

I downloaded the latest version of Black Mesa on Steam (current content BuildID: 2875662) and when I tried to launch it, nothing happened. The process blm_linux was running for ~1 minute and then it stopped and awarded me with a “Wild Blue” trading card.

I tried running Black Mesa from terminal and I got this error:

➜ Black Mesa ./bms.sh

This is normally a bug in some application using the D-Bus library.

There have been sugestions that Black Mesa could have problems with AMD graphics cards and the solution would be to remove libstdc++.so.6 from the game’s bin folder. However that was back in 2017. In my current version of the game libstdc++.so.6 is not even present.

I’m on Ubuntu 18.04.1 x64, AMD® A4-9120 Radeon R3, AMD® Stoney. I have Portal & Half-Life 2 installed, both run fine after I installed some 32bit libraries (list of all 32bit packages installed on my system can be found here).

Look on the dedicated Linux forum here https://steamcommunity.com/app/362890/discussions/1/
and read everything this Crowbar Collective Linux developer posts https://steamcommunity.com/id/void-995/posthistory/

Here’s my progress so far:

I ran the game with a -dev flag which helped me locate the problem:

➜ Black Mesa ./bms_linux -dev

This has been already discussed and the solution is to copy libsteam_api.so from the game’s bin folder to /usr/lib.

Now the game launches and only complains about not having game_shader_dx6.so, game_shader_dx7.so , game_shader_dx8.so, game_shader_dx9.so. It gets past the crowbar logo to the loading screen. At this point the game minimizes several times, complains about invalid colors and then keeps repeating that “shaderapi’s centroid mask (0x0000000C) differs from mask derived from shader name (0x00000000) for shader ps-file”.

The game is playable now!
I was able to load the first level, it worked fine until it crashed due to insufficient memory. I’m sure that when I buy more RAM, it will be OK.

That’s too cool. Glad I could point you to a resource that had useful info.
Lord knows when I switch over to Linux there will be much gnashing of teeth and many tears shed.:unamused:
