how do you all speak english? I meen, the people from norway and portugal?
You know how in the U.S. you have to learn foreign languages for school, I would imagine its the same?
Indeed.
Portugal X 3
Here in Portugal we learn English since the 1st grade (I only started learning it when I was in the 5th grade, but now kids start learning it sooner). It’s the “default” second language. We learn a second foreign language in the 7th grade and in the 10th grade we choose the one we want to keep learning (either English, the one from the 7th grade, or we start a new one).
Unfortunately more than half of our youth is too stupid to remember it after school.
Besides, school only teaches you the basics. Unless you take a an english course in college, you’ll never learn it properly if you don’t try to actively learn it by yourself.
Most of my advanced english I learned it on the internet and by forcing myself to watch movies without subtitles.
Czech Republic (no, it is not in Russia)
Its not just your youth, I guarantee you the USA is much lazier when it comes to foreign languages. The percentage people in the world who speak english as a second language greatly exceeds the percentage of Americans who can speak any other language besides english. America is not a bilingual country.
If one cannot tell, I am from the US.
Portugal +1
Oh… Portugal x5
And as others said before, I learned english first in school and then by reading books , playing games, watching movies, TV Series, etc… It’s not too difficult if you just try to do it.
