Black Mesa Public Beta Patch- Jan 13th 2016

Take anything from VNN with a grain of salt, he usually finds something from reddit, does no research, and immediately posts a video about it. The “new” exploit is very old and was fixed over a year ago in Garry’s Mod. Garry himself sent the fix to Valve and they pushed it.

This exploit also existed before and after that, it’s last appearance was in september 2015, it wouldn’t be impossible for it to come back.

I’m imagining some pasty white nerd typing that out and it’s making me giggle uncontrollably.

Anyway, public Beta takes a few minutes to start, meaning it’s not actually breaking my install like I thought it was, right? I thought it was just refusing to launch.

Yea, we’re not sure whats caused the hang time. We thought it was workshop addons (the more you had, the longer it would take) but even devs with 0 workshop interaction are reporting long loading times. Our internal build of this version too didn’t seem to have much issue, so there’s something happening between our build and when we push to steam thats causing something hinky to happen.

We’re aware of it, but as always, aren’t sure of the timeline. This is why we have the public beta!

Also, guys, I love the discussion about potential exploits, but this is not the thread to discuss it. If you could, make a new thread if you’d like to, or take it to a private message conversation. I’d like to keep this thread open so it’s easy to discuss the public beta and it’s issues/fixes.

I’ve noticed that the .vpk file naming convention has changed in the public-beta release.

Example:

Before:

bms_textures_000.vpk
bms_textures_001.vpk

bms_textures_dir.vpk

Now (public-beta):

bms_textures.vpk
bms_textures.vpk_000.vpk
bms_textures.vpk_001.vpk

Attempting to open the ‘bms_textures.vpk’ file in GCFScape causes it to crash (but it works if I rename the files back to the old format).

I found some…Unforeseen… bugs in this public beta. Well, none in-game, actually. Thats because i cant boot up the game. Every time i try to boot it up, it crashes, or something. I’ll get to the first loading screen, then BOOM, it crashes. But i don’t know, the issue could be my computer ( it’s a piece of crap ), so just thought i should post here about this. On a side note, the game is really great guys. Keep up the good work!

If you post your specs, (you can PM me if you’re not comfortable doing it publically) it may help us figure out the cause.

Well, derpity derp derp, it’s fixed. BM started working again shortly after i posted that. Maybe it just takes a few times for it to boot up properly. Gimme a few minutes to find the specs.

Okay, here they are:

Manufacturer: TOSHIBA

Model: Satellite A355D

Processor: AMD Turion X2 Ultra Dual-Core Mobile ZM-80 2.10 GHz

Memory (RAM): 4.00 GB

System type: 64-bit Operating System

This is all the info i could find about my computer. I hope to get a better one soon.

Okay, un-derpity derp derp, the crashing is back. I believe now it has something to do with black mesa itself. This is a public beta after all, so glitches probably tend to happen more often. :frowning:

I can confirm the long startup times on my end. FWIW, specs:

OS: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
CPU: Intel i5-3570K (4 cores/4 threads)
GPU: ASUS-built NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670
RAM: 16GB DDR3

I’m also having another issue, though I’m not sure if this is a mistake on my end or not - on the public beta, none of my addons actually do anything. I’m not just talking workshop addons - .vpk’s from other places just don’t load in-game.

Is common/Black Mesa/bms/addons still the correct path for .vpk’s?

No, it’s in SteamApps/Workshop/Content/382890 now.

Tried copying all the .vpk’s from addons over to the new folder, things still aren’t working right.

The game either uses vanilla content instead of the addon, or (more commonly) fails to load the content altogether (i.e. missing materials, models, sounds, etc.).

Was there a change to the file structure that would cause old .vpk’s to behave this way?

The only FIX IT DENIZ I know about is not in UC, but in QE. Can someone point me to the one in UC?

Also it seems my game boots quite slowly as well. But I haven’t played in a while, so I couldn’t tell you if it’s slower than before, or that it’s just the Source engine’s super-duper loading speeds as usual.

You need to resubscribe to all the workshop content, as it needs a specific folder with the workshop item ID. When you sub, it’ll make a folder in the content/362890 folder with a unique number and the content inside that. Can’t just drop the .vpk’s into the addons folder.

No, it’s booting slower than normal. We’re looking into it.

  • The first problem:
Very long start the game, it came to the point that the last 20 minutes, and the game and are not included.
    10 Windows 64-bit
The AMD Athlon 64 Dual Core 2.8Ghz
    RAM 4gb
  • The second problem
    Workshop
Audio files do not work, I now publishes Russian voice, textures and subtitle Workshop, and faced with such a problem.
If you use to download Tools “p2map_publish.exe” have to share large files over 100 MB on the stable version running on a beta patch and is not,
If you use the “blackmesa_publish.exe”, is in a stable version of the publication is not working at all, not packed VPK, not unpacked, and the beta patch works only textures, sounds are not working.

When you try to connect an addon that replaces the audio files, the console says this:

Cannot figure out which search path sound\vo\inbound_tram\tram_01_goodmorning.wav came from. Absolute path is E:/Steam/steamapps/workshop/content/362890/600910999/bms_sound_vo_russian.vpk/sound/vo/inbound_tram/tram_01_goodmorning.wav
Failed to load sound “vo\inbound_tram\tram_01_goodmorning.wav”, file probably missing from disk/repository

And so every time you try to play sound.
If you enter the console snd_restart sound appears.

But subtitles do not run and not managed by any means.

Oh, this is something i didn’t check.
I will pass the bug off to the team. Thank you.

Oh, also, when i did get BM to start, i can confirm workshop addons work again.

You have access to hidden addons from the workshop?
