Black Mesa 2009 Update

I can’t believe this is happening I feel like I just found out my grandma got raped

Unless you actively contribute to it, you have zero right to it.
The fact that they choose to release it to us at all is a privilege, not to be taken lightly.
Thus, you have no right to feel betrayed.
If you want more info on this, search for “Lawyered” in this forum.

I was going to respond to J-Dude saying he needs to get a life, but Psyborg already did it much more eloquently and effectively than I could.

But still, J-Dude, get a life. Seriously.

Never really been into that kind of thing, but who am I to judge?

checks off the last of the mod-critique cliches to be spoken here

Judy, show the man what he’s won!

Correction: because BLACK MESA SOURCE was delayed. Those are two very different animal my friend.

Speaking of which, don’t be like THIS man.

:awesome:
how remarkably obtuse of you.

EDIT: oh wait… psyborg’s posts seem even more justified now[/SIZE]

:fffuuu:

J-Dude, give it up.

They are all to dense and thick-headed to get what you are saying.

or maybe they understand what you are saying and read every word and YOU are refusing to let sink in what THEY are responding. If you have create something, ANYTHING, of entertainment value and you truly care about it you will take the time to do it right.
Will you worry about releasing it (whatever it may be) before it’s ready just to appease the yearnings of people?
If you write a novel and you know with a few more months you will turn your meek little story into a bestseller you would release it for the people acting a fool as opposed on releasing something great that EVERYONE will enjoy?
If people want that pie you are baking and are bitching and moaning would you take it out and serve it even though it’s still doughy and nasty instead of leaving it in another 10 mins so it taste like it should?

Your -points-, while interesting, are wrong.
They are not logical or reasonable conclusions to come to as much as you want them to be.

Instead of being upset and writing a diatribe of ways you think they -wronged- you, sit back and THINK about what others are saying. It makes sense (a lot more than yours).

I know you won’t take the time to, but you could and it would benefit you most of all.

just sayin’…

J-Dude, I demand you respond to my previous post and tell me how this is any different.
Without smartass remarks about how we don’t get money, asshole.

It really doesn’t matter how bad you feel about all of this, J-Dude. The fact remains that the mod is delayed, and no amount of “scolding” you do to your “dog” will teach the team anything, as if they need to be taught.

And again on your “it isn’t free” hogwash. It IS free. This mod is intended for people who already paid for HL2. Your money, however much you paid, went to THAT game. If you bought that game for the sole reason to play Black Mesa, well, you’re a dolt for spending money to play something being developed by people who are NOT getting paid for this.

Now, I can see your point that when you apparently convince kids to buy into the Half-Life series by showing them a Black Mesa trailer, and that child is let down when they purchase and do NOT get Black Mesa. But that kid’s sadness falls at YOUR feet, not the feet of the unpaid, volunteer staff at Black Mesa. You convinced him to spend. The BMS team was merely showing off their work.

J-Dude, you’re being laughed at because of your reaction to having to wait. Do you know who throws these temper-tantrums? Kids. Little ones. Brats. You write like an adult so I assume you have the capacity for patience. And to be honest, a FREE (it is!) mod is only gravy on top of an excellent game I already purchased. If it never comes out, I will still be okay, and you will too.

So before this gets locked, I hope the BMS team knows delays are okay, and you don’t owe anyone anything. So thanks for doing what you do, making good gravy. FREE good gravy.

I like this man’s usage of delicious, savory metaphors.

When he says it isn’t free, I’m guessing he’s talking about the spillover benefits of having a Source-based game.

haha. broken. they all fall in the end. ALL of them.

it is a disapointment though. I had hoped you could atleast make it three pages before you droped your mightiness and started making snively comebacks.

This sucks
I beg you to finish the mod before the source engine is outdated. You guys have to step it up if you want to complete the mod. Maybe tackling an enormous challenge like this was too much for you. I think you should expand your mod team and use more help from the community.

Fuck it. I told myself I wasn’t going to do this, but if you want a point-by-point-yes-I-fucking-read-it breakdown of your hilariously butthurt post, then so be it.

Considering I have absolutely no interest in Blizzard’s gaming output, I can’t really comment on it.

OK. Let me see if I’ve got this straight. You’re equating a lovable family pet to a group of strangers (who you’ve never met), working on a project done entirely from their own time simply to both please the fans of the Half Life series and further their own game development careers. Hm. The problem with this pisspoor analogy is that a family dog is expected to be subservient to its master. Are you, by the definition of this, suggesting that somehow we are the masters of the Black Mesa Team, and that they should obey our every command lest they be ‘scolded’?

How can you even defend such a poorly thought out and patronising statement?

Yes. No shit Sherlock. You figure this one all out by yourself, or did someone map it out in crayon? Of course the Black Mesa Team are doing this to further their careers! Work on such a scale (in terms of aesthetic splendour and dedication) will be very, very noticeable by Developers across the globe.

I agree. To a big, brightly coloured, point. Retail games have levels of infrastructure that are built entirely around the development of the game. These include: working hours; basic salary; deadlines; budgets; financial targets; forecast sales targets; marketing; an office and so on. I didn’t think I’d need to point those out to you, but these are some of the few things that the Black Mesa Team lack (despite a pretty impressive communication system, which is astonishing given the size of the project). We can treat the mod as a ‘retail’ game all we like, which is easy considering the depth and breadth of the project, but without the above infrastructure, it’s still a Community-based, free-to-play, developed in their spare time modification.

Considering that opinion is purely subjective, I’ll dismiss your “surpassed most retail game remakes” point and move straight on to the “remain unchallenged” before settling on the “INVOKE judgement” point.

I’d like to understand just what you understand is the level of work that goes into a retail game remake? I’ll give you a second. OK, so if we assume that it’s a hell of a lot consider that due to my above point that retail games have the required infrastructure to build such works, we then have to dismiss them outright, because such comparisons would be unfair on the Black Mesa Team (adding pressure where there really shouldn’t be any). So, we have to look at the other “challengers”, namely: other mod teams willing to stake six years, engine changes, Alpha leaks, forum crashes, numerous trolls and hackers, unforeseen delays, scrapping work, real-life and various Team coming-and-goings to make a remake of a retail game and still make it to the point where a release is not only inevitable, but tantalisingly close. Needless to say, there aren’t many. In a way, Black Mesa is almost unique.

So this leads me on to “INVOKING judgement” on the team. What exactly is this ‘judgement’ you are invoking? Was it the big ‘2009’ at the end of the trailer? Was it that? That the Team couldn’t quite make an estimated release date? It can’t be the quality of the work, you yourself have said it is far and beyond that of a mod. So it must be the release date. Why is it so difficult to grasp that this is a project done entirely in their own time? These guys have had SIX years to give up and call it quits, with absolutely no repercussions other than a few pissed off ModDb and YouTube users. Why are you acting like this is the only thing worth a damn this side of interactive porn? Y’know what? I’m going to go to work tomorrow and forget about Black Mesa. I’m going to go to the pub and forget about Black Mesa. I’m going to watch football and forget about Black Mesa. And when I finally come back here, to the forums, I’ll have forgotten I’d even posted this.

Christ. How were you during Half Life 2’s delays? You must have been apoplectic with rage. I’m not really going to elaborate on this point as I’m simply highlighting it to show people how you really are.

Both these points are poor. Firstly, as you readily admit, you know the content that the Black Mesa Team has provided isn’t shit, so Rule One doesn’t apply. Rule Two is also purely subjective - you believe that anything given ‘free’ is free from criticism? Bullshit. You can criticise all you like. Mods have lived and died due to criticism. It’s up to the modders to listen to you.

This is semantics. Most people will buy games to play them as they bought them with little care or want for modifications. Even those who do buy a Source game (for quite a small price,so not ‘costly’ at all) with the intention of using it only as a Base for Black Mesa does so willingly as it is - unfortunately - a prerequisite for playing mods. Either way, none of this money goes to the Team! They see no monetary benefit (if anything, deficit) to the development of the mod!

Oh, and Console Fans? What if they don’t have a PC? Or, if they do, one not powerful enough to run Black Mesa? Would you then say “Black Mesa isn’t free! I had a friend who needed to build a $1000 PC and buy the Orange Box for $24.99 just so he could play Black Mesa!” What a load of bollocks.

I don’t see any truth, because it’s all bollocks. I suppose I’m not being honest with myself, though. Cheers Dr. Freud.

Hey admins and developers. I got a really cool idea:
Make a demo of the first level until Gordon Freeman suits up and upload it to youtube!

Ah, I was waiting for someone to post so I could apologise to everyone else about the wall of text (of doom).

nay nay! moar I say! MOAR!!

I was going to do what Garcian just did and give a blow by blow response/critique to the astonishing lack of critical thinking displayed by J-dud, but I really can’t be arsed to waste my time responding to someone who needs to get a fucking grip on reality.

As my best mate always used to say, you can lead a whore to culture, but you can’t make her think.

Well, that was fun while it lasted.

This game will be EPIC. I’ve been reading some of the comments in this thread and I’ve noticed that there are many inconsiderate people on this forum. These people have been working hard for six years on BMS. I’ve waited for six years, I think I can wait a little longer just like a normal person would.

EDIT: My Point is completely proven in the post below.

Why I chose to join the form now and not sooner, I may never know, but any ways…Hello Black Mesa Source Forums!!!

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
