atheists in america

I love when some atheist moron walks in all “Religion doesn’t exist”.

If there was no religion, people wouldn’t believe in gods in the the first place, because you couldn’t, because that action wouldn’t exist.

I don’t know. When I went to church they used to make fun of other religion’s rituals all the time as examples of why the other religion is wrong. “Would you worship a cow’? That’s pretty stupid isn’t it. That’s why we believe in jesus.”

So saying that they all have rituals doesn’t mean they’d agree. In fact the rituals more often than not set them apart.

As far as those “true religions” you were mentioning imonfire, I think of those as more of belief systems. There’s no “god” related to it, just a way of thinking about life, nature, humanity, etc.

There’s some very interesting things I’ve learned by studying zen and native american beliefs. They are both very intelligent, and were way closer in touch with reality and nature than any “religion” is.

Also ramirezoid, I was being entirely serious, just like I am in this sentence.

@ Ramirezoid

Uh oh, stepping into the existential side of things.

I really hate online debates… oh… excuse me… discussions.

They go on forever, people get on the defensive, people misquote or take out of context comments made, people read into what was said, some are never happy with how the discussion is going unless someone else is brought down, insults and nasty innuendos are littered among the cleverly crafted zingers, and yet no one ever changes their mind as a result of the discussions.

Other than this here post, this Christian is staying out of it.

And to answer the original question… everyone knows that it is politically correct to be an Athiest in America.

Yeah it makes sense. But I’m pretty sure Native Americans have gods. They’re just not the same as middle-eastern religion’s gods.

Like I was going to discuss with a religious person, might aswell take a crowbar and wait on the beach for a 7 hour war before i’d win that discussion.

Well they have “the great spirit” or “the spirit of the land” which isn’t really that defined by them, kind of a mother nature type thing.

Also this thread rocks, I hope it goes on forever

What is it with you guys and straw man arguments? Lol… I’m not saying athiest communities “cannot” be organized (look at China), I’m saying religious communities have the advantage of already being organized when the first bomb drops.

I think rather its “politically correct” to be tolerant of other peoples’ beliefs (or lack of such) in America. Sadly this isn’t always the case.

How about we just lock this topic before the shitstorm gets bigger.

You’re all gonna just argue forever. Stop now.

Or you didn’t read the other sentences, or you completely forgot them. We are already organized. By the government.

Leave it to the religious to resort to violence.

Anyway religious people already fight amongst themselves more than they’re unified against atheism, so I don’t see much of a problem there.

If anything the religions might wipe each other out soon with the increasing violence in the middle east/europe.

What happens if someone cuts the phone lines/takes out cell towers? How is the “government” going to convey orders to you?

Religion and government shouldn’t mix. In fact, religion and the Internet shouldn’t mix either :stuck_out_tongue:

Internet and the Government are the same thing.

ok… the thread wasn’t supposed to be a “religion war thread” I only wanted to know how tolerated are atheists in USA, but ok, now the thread gave me a good overview about the opinions about religion of each one who posted here, thx.
My own opinion about religion:

I’m an atheist and I don’t believe in God or any other theories about our origins,
because it makes no sense to me in any way.
how could the humankind know about its origin without being at the time when we originated?
The origin of ours will ever be a mystery, except we invent a timemachine.
If you want to believe in something then do it, if you feel better then
but also respect other beliefs and religions and don’t be intolerant to them.

This right here is also my problem with Atheism (I’m not particularly religious either). I think the idea that everything came from nothing is just as ridiculous (or plausible) an idea as everything coming from a sentient being.

And how are you gonna communicate with your church?

Maybe this is too black and white? Would an IRA terrorist (extremists aren’t only Muslims) be the same as the old dear who lives next door and goes to church on sundays since her husband passed away? Similarly, would I be the same as someone who throws bricks through the windows of mosques? (I assure you I’m not :stuck_out_tongue: ).

People are individuals, and the interpretation of their beliefs will be different for each person. So there is no ‘us’ and ‘them’, atheists and religious people who will have a war. Religion isn’t just a set of beliefs, it can be a different way of looking at the world, and a cause to think. I’m not religious, but am interested to hear about the beliefs of others, and how it can add to their lives. A tiny minority, be they Jewish, Muslim, Christian or Atheist, give everyone a bad name. The day we rise above it is the day that religion can stop being used as an excuse to drive us apart.

And I thought I wouldn’t get involved in this
