Maybe he’s trying to be funny. It made me chuckle.
Edit: Nevermind, that location has no Pizza Box (or anything at all). Why was it posted though… I left a comment with the removed location (I deleted it) in case it was or used to be important.
I was looking through the images to see if anything stood out, and I noticed something. In this tweet on Tim Evans’ twitter feed, there’s this image of the localdesertsingles poster/logo.
Now, this might just be due to the images being saved differently with different compression levels, so it may be nothing, but it could be worth checking out.
I dug a little deeper, but I couldn’t find any unusual data chunks in the image files, or telltale signs of steganography. However, I did find something odd in the twitter image. If you do an LSB enhancement or mess with the levels, you’ll see two lines crossing each other like a cross in the background behind the cloud/heart, which seems to divide the image into four quadrants. There are also subtle differences in the gradient pattern in the background between the two versions of the image.
EDIT: Mystery solved. It turned out that the strangeness in the twitter version of the image (the larger file size, apparent lines in the background and differences in the gradient) was caused by the way Twitter scales and compresses images uploaded to its service. See faed’s post (@faed: thank you for clearing that up).
I’ve spent some time with the sound files and have found a voice.
I removed some distortion, then doubled the speed to end up with THIS.
Now, who here has the ability to remove flange effects from audio? I know just enough about it to be dangerous but not enough to be correctly effective!
Maybe there is a special arrangement these quadrants need to be in.
Edit: I forgot I had a plugin for PDN that decoded steganography. It revealed the same thing, just in the color green. Also using the magic wand tool on the original twitter pic revealed the weave. This is clearly deliberate.
There’s definitely something going on with the twitter image. If you convert the twitter image to .txt, it’s almost entirely made of repeated strings of characters. It doesn’t look immediately like there’s any pattern to how long the strings themselves are or how many times they’re repeated, but it’s definitely suspicious.
Looks like there might be another image file hidden inside it, too…
Edit: That might not be a hidden image file actually, now that I’m looking up how PNG files are formatted.
Edit 2: Okay, it’s probably not hidden images so much as just the way twitter handles pictures. That still leaves the other differences in the files, though, and the repeated strings might still be significant (not seeing that in other twitter images, but I’ve only found JPGs so far to compare to).
Edit: I also decided to take a look at the html code: “background: radial-gradient(ellipse at center center , #A90329 0%, #8F0222 44%, #6D0019 100%) repeat scroll 0% 0% transparent;”
What other leads do we have besides the gradient stuff, the cleaned up audio and the Fibonacci stuff?
The audio seems promising but it might just be another scientist quote or something just to fuck with us.
What can we do with the gradient in the image if it is intentional?
EDIT: Maybe the numbers in the page links mean something, like an order or some such. We’re running out of leads so I’m just guessing now.
The hint 21 goes into 1 might be about factors, I ran the numbers through factors and found that no number except for the first and the last has the same amount of factors, all factors will include the 1 and itself as a factor, if you want to omit that, then subtract two.
2619: Depression linked to reading internet comments, new study suggests \8 factors
7225: $7,225 - Black 2007 Ford Focus \though I’m not sure if this one is right or not, since its not in a link so to speak. \ 9 factors
8273: SpaceX launch postponed for unspecified reason \ two, prime
10360: all-clear-given-for-black-mesa-evacuation-zone \ 32 factors
92835: $150 - ranger rci-6300f25 ham/cb \found in the html code \ 12 factors

Note that if it wasn’t for the 2007 ford focus, the number of factors would all be even.
2, 6, 8, 8, 9, 12, 16, 32 is the possible sequence.
I barely see it. All of my friends can barely see it as well. They wouldn’t have even noticed unless I pointed it out. Regardless you are right that it probably nothing.
Edit: I checked one last friends screen, it turns out it was more visible. I think it’s my monitor…
No there isn’t any kind of code that could be hidden in a gradient. I tried every combination of rendering and filtering with both images, but nothing seems to appear. Maybe the gradient is just to fuck with us…
It has been noted one of the first thing we saw on page actually.
But since we can’t view comments, it isn’t that useful unfortunately.
Also, its 21 into 1.
EDIT: Also, has anyone looked on military radios in game, do they have same frequency as the on kxbm.net radio?
Uhm im kinda new to this ARG-stuff and im not sure if anyone has tried something about this but has anyone tried to investigate the locations COCHITI, MI and Santa Fe? They are really close to each other. But i did not searched any further.
(Sorry for bad english (not native))
I asked Storm on Steam whether ascience.ru was related, he said it wasn’t. I’m not sure whether you’d figured this out already, but I thought I may as well let you know
Instead of digging through all the information, we could just gather all of our resources and offer Storm a lump sum of money for a hint in the right direction. I got a couple quarters lying around that I could pitch in.
Just an update on the Chapter One thing, they’ve removed the ‘A Freeman Glitched Between Portals’ song from their youtube page. I am pretty sure we will be hearing this again at the end of this ARG, and that it being posted when it was was a mistake.
That pizza box location is found in the map’s .bsp file, but the pizza box is not visible in-game. I re-edited the wiki page, added it back in and made a note to that effect.
Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
